Frank Bennett has left the big city life to become the sheriff of Trout Run. For the most part Bennett enjoys his job, but he is uncomfortable with some of the ideas his citizens have regarding police officers. When Bennett stops by the town's grocery store he learns that Mary Pat Sheehan is late for work. Bennett is not worried, but tells the staff that if she has not shown up by evening to let him know. While the grocery store does not call him, he does receive a call stating that her car has been found on the side of the road. Mary Pat is found dead in her car; however, there is no evidence of a crash.

Her autopsy reveals that she died of an infection from childbirth, not from collision-related injuries. This comes as a huge shock as Mary Pat is unmarried and was not involved with anyone. The biggest question, though, is where is this newborn child! Bennett will stop at nothing to find the child and the doctor or person who did not provide adequate medical care for her.

A subplot of SWALLOW THE HOOK deals with environmental concerns. Green Tomorrow is interested in shutting down a tourist attraction called Raging Rapids. The local business owners do not understand this problem, especially since there is a house being built that will cause more long-term ecological damage than this attraction does. When the national leader of this group is murdered, Bennett must help the state police with their investigation.

SWALLOW THE HOOK is a small-town cozy. Yes, it does deal with murder and assaults; however, all of the action appears behind the scenes and is not referred to in much detail. Individual characters and individual problems are just as important to the plot as is the actual crime. The town itself does not have much crime and almost decided to abolish the local police force. The majority of the citizens are only concerned with what directly effects them and their own needs, instead of having the ability to see the larger picture.

SWALLOW THE HOOK is the second book in the Adirondack mystery series.
