For those of you looking for a mystery/fantasy as in the first two books in the series, forget it. This one is more fantasy, based on Celtic mythology, than either A KISS OF SHADOWS or A CARESS OF TWILIGHT.

Half human, half Sidhe, Princess Meredith NicEssus, is heir to the throne of Fairie (if she can get pregnant and prove her fertility). She really tries hard to get pregnant, sleeping with a different one of her guards, many of whom had been gods before the major battles between the Seelie and Unseelie courts weakened both sides. They have to behave themselves otherwise -- no magic allowed in the US, the last country in the world to allow them haven.

Her uncle, the king of the Seelie court, doesn't want a half-breed to become queen. Her alliance with the Goblin King will expire in two months, at the same time as her cousin, Cel, will be released from the torture chamber in which his mother, the Queen of Air and Darkness of the Unseelie Court, imprisoned him.

Things are changing in Merry's home in Los Angeles however. Her powers are increasing and some of her lovers are regaining their godlike status. She is summoned to court, and goes, with her guards, first to see her aunt the Queen where Merry finds her in a berserker state.

For those who love Hamilton's Merry Gentry series, this is another funny entry. How does she invent all these creatures for Merry to take to her bed? It is a bit over the top, both in violence and bawdiness, but then so was PAMELA and TOM JONES and TRISTRAM SHANDY and even GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. This can be read as a morality tale, just as those earlier novels were, and a cautionary tale. Is there any difference between the Seelie Court and the Unseelie Court or the Protestants and the Catholics in Northern Ireland today?
