A stormy day in Angel's Gap, Maryland. Laine Tavish, owner of Remember When, an antique shop, has given her assistant the day off, figuring that no one would venture out on such a day, but the shop is full with regular customers and browsers. A strange little man enters the shop, gives Laine his card, asks her to phone him, goes outside and is run over. Laine runs out to see what happens, and recognizes the man as her 'Uncle' Willy Young.

Laine Tavish is actually Elaine O'Hara, the daughter of a charming petty thief, and Uncle Willy was her father's partner. Laine has tried to reinvent herself, and has generally succeeded until now. Shortly thereafter, a handsome stranger, insurance investigator and ex-cop, Max Gannon enters the shop and buys a set of glasses for his mother. Since this is the part of the story written by Nora Roberts, of course they fall for each other. Her father had been part of a jewel robbery involving millions of dollars worth of diamonds. Max and Laine search for them.

In the hot summer of 2059, Samantha Gannon, granddaughter of Laine and Max, has just returned home after a tour promoting her new book about that past jewel robbery. Sam finds her house sitter dead, her throat slit, and her house ransacked. J.D. Robb's detective Lt Eve Dallas catches the murder, and the search begins again.

Perhaps Nora Roberts fans will enjoy this book. I found the first half tedious, and the second half disappointing. REMEMBER WHEN is considered to be the 18th book in the . . . IN DEATH series. It is assumed that the reader will bring the previous 17 titles to mind when reading REMEMBER WHEN. Roberts/Robb may be a multiple prizewinner for romantic fiction, but I think her series fans will be unhappy with this offering.
