As a new bride, Pauly Caton takes pictures of her new husband in a hot-air balloon. When the pilot of the balloon is shot and the balloon is crashing into the river, a near-naked child jumps from the gondola as it is splashing into the water. Pauly logically runs through the water to her husband only to find that his neck is broken. When the police begin to ask questions, they don't believe Pauly's vision of the child and start to investigate her further since she is now the recipient of much insurance money.

Needing some reassurance and things not making sense so far, Pauly goes to stay with her grandmother who is a part-owner of a carnival. Pauly believed she had married a hydrologist, now she begins to wonder if he was involved in some kind of a con game that could be politically involved and could also involve child pornography after she looks in the safety deposit box.

Pauly needs to reset her life and to figure out what really happened, so she takes her husband's place in his business which involves water rights and working with resentful partners. Considering that Randy had been somewhat a nerd, none of her findings make sense. What she finds the most disconcerting is that she hadn't known this man she had married at all!

The plot was believable and actually did conclude logically even though I frequently wondered how any author could successfully pull all this together. The characters all possessed certain personality quirks that made them more delightful and believable.

After reading Flash Flood, I wondered how Susan Slater could top that book. She definitely has another successful book in FIVE O'CLOCK SHADOW. With intricate details intertwining the events in this story, this is one of the few books that I would ever want to read again. I'm certain I had missed some things that I would enjoy rereading even knowing the ending.

Warning: This can keep you awake late at night.
