Monsieur Pamplemousse, formerly an inspector with the Paris Surete and now a gastronomic reviewer for LeGuide, is given a ticket to the TV performance of Claude Chavignol at the Cuisine de Chavignol, France's premier television cookery program. Chavignol is a magician turned chef and noted gastronome. He is a veritable showman, and is making a production of swallowing an oyster in his performance. To the horror of the audience he utters a cry and collapses behind the studio kitchen worktop.

Pamplemousse rushes to the stage to resuscitate him, but halts in his proposed CPR when he detects the odor of bitter almonds and concludes that Chavignol has been poisoned by cyanide.

Monsieur Leclerq, director of LeGuide, and Pamplemousse's boss, implores him to investigate and find the murderer. Leclerq is involved with Chavignol's wife and doesn't wish to be implicated. Aided by his faithful bloodhound, Pomme Frites, Pamplemousse begins his search for the murderer. They become involved in a world of blackmail and magic. In the course of his investigations, Pamplemousse is rescued from Madame Chavignol's clutches by the ever-alert Pomme Frites.

This is an entertaining adventure in the world of French cuisine. It is colorful with a distinctive comedic narrative. The characters of Pamplemousse and Pomme Frites are two engaging creatures who are supported by a cast of intriguing and captivating characters. There is also a realistic and detailed picture of Paris. This is guaranteed to bring a smile to the reader's face.
