Max Travis, one of the country's best prosecutors, is a workaholic and is determined to bring criminals to justice. His two best friends are the victims of a home invasion robbery. Highwire is a former NBA star who is now a sports commentator on local TV and Roop is the owner of the city's hottest night spot. The two were in Roop's home when two masked men invaded the house and demanded the money they knew was in a hidden safe. Roop surrendered the money but one of the robbers went berserk and shot Highwire, disabling him.

Max determines to bring the two robbers to justice. He finds that Dana Waverleigh, a beautiful blonde hairdresser who had been dating Roop, told her sleazy boyfriend, Jack Nizhi, about the safe. Nizhi and his partner, Nicky Bortolotti, instigated the robbery. Bortolotti, a psychotic racist who models himself after Edward G Robinson's character in Little Caesar shot Highwire because he is black. Max becomes involved with Dana and has problems reconciling her involvement in this inside job. He must unravel his relationship with her before he can resume his normal life.

This is a bloody story full of violence. The characters are complex: Max a contradiction as a star in the courtroom and a nonentity in his private life; Dana with her low esteem; Bortolotti with his psychoses. The reader is taken on a scary trip inside the heads of Jack and his partner, Bortolotti. The relationships between Max and his friends, and Max and his lovers are thoroughly explored.
