Dinosaurs live. They disguise themselves as humans, but they have a parallel civilization. In ANONYMOUS REX, we met velociraptor Vincent Rubio, a Hollywood PI with a basil habit (herbs turn them on). In his prequel, we find Vincent and Ernie Watson, his partner, breaking into the house of Louise, Ernie's ex-wife, who has since remarried. Ernie wants his marriage certificate, and he finds it.

They get back to their office to find Minsky, a midget who is really a hadrosaur in disguise, a dentist and their landlord beside himself. He thinks Star, an Allosaur he is involved with has stolen some of his tools and prescription pads. He insists that Star is a good girl and only sells maps to the homes of the stars, but Vincent and Eddie know better.

The next morning, Louise comes to the office while Ernie is out. She asks Vincent to help find her brother who has joined a cult which purports to bring dinosaurs back to their natural form. Vincent and Ernie walk down Hollywood Boulevard until they are accosted by one of the naturals. The two PIs follow up all their leads and solve all their cases but we have an hilarious time following them to Hawaii and back.

CASUAL REX is a great read for a day when you are depressed and need cheering up. The third book following the adventures of Vincent Rubio is due out early next year. Until then, bring on the high-grade basil and chill.
