Pete Braga, the infamous eighty-four year old business tycoon, is murdered. Tom McMichael is on rotation with his partner and they are called to the crime scene. Pete's young nurse is found covered in blood after having attempted to administer CPR. She proclaims her innocence and can provide no helpful information. McMichael finds himself trying to find a murder suspect beyond the most likely suspect. And McMichael does have numerous suspects to choose from. Braga was involved in legal and illegal activities. In addition he seemed about ready to break promises. There is also a missing prostitute he frequented, plus he was about ready to change his will and cut one of his many heirs out.

The irony, of the situation McMichael finds himself in, is that he knows the perfect suspect already – his father or other family member. Unfortunately, the McMichaels and the Bragas have not had a peaceful relationship. The culmination of this feud was when Tom's father beat up Braga's son, which left him with the mental capabilities of a child. This feud, although not resolved or ended, has been silent the last couple years. Silent that is until this murder forces Tom to confront his own family and past. McMichael must struggle to solve this murder before he is accused of hiding a murderer.

COLD PURSUIT is a high-speed thriller. The characters were constantly in motion trying to solve the crime, avoid detection or ponder family relationships and loyalties. As with any book there were highs and lows in the writing style. The majority of the book was well written and intelligent; however, a couple of moments were simply mundane and uninspired. The book does not keep you guessing until the end; however, you have to be on the ball to catch the few hints and clues along the way. Jefferson Parker has mastered the techniques necessary to succeed in this genre.

COLD PURSUIT is Jefferson Parker's fifth book.
