Kit O'Malley seems to attract trouble wherever she goes. A former police officer turned private investigator; Kit can handle any crime she finds. Or at least that is what she thinks. Her friend Angie owns a woman's bar, where you do not have to be a lesbian to enter; however, no men are allowed. Angie calls Kit and the police because she has a dead body in her bar. Detective-Sergeant Graham Parker is responsible for this investigation and unfortunately dislikes Kit passionately.

The situation gets worse when the body is identified. It is the son of Queenie Riley. Queenie happens to be a lovely old lady who is also the head of one of the largest criminal organizations in Melbourne. She is a mob boss! Although Kit is not legally allowed to investigate a murder, due to the type of PI license she has, she finds herself investigating the transportation of the body. This forces her to drag her friends into a dangerous situation involving Queenie Riley and her enemies. Kit must solve this murder before Angie's bar is closed forever or another body is found.

The heroine of THICKER THAN WATER is reminiscent of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. Both Plum and Kit find themselves in dangerous situations where they need rescuing. In addition, both heroines are witty, sarcastic and bold. They know the ugliness of life but still plan on fighting. Kit does have the ability to take care of herself for the most part and has a better grasp on reality than Plum tends to. It is for these reasons, that Kit's adventures remain interesting.

My only complaint is that this book does contain unnecessary references to sex. Luckily it is not explicit descriptions. While I don't mind the description of sex when it is necessary to the plot, I do not like feeling as though I am peeking into someone's bedroom window. When it is gratuitous sex, sex is being used to define who a person is rather than move the story along. As long as the love interest is a fully consenting grownup, it is rarely vital to the plot. I understand that Cameron included the information simply to give equal time to homosexuality and that it is more of a political statement than anything else; yet, it was still unnecessary to the general plot.

THICKER THAN WATER is the third book in the Kit O'Malley series.
