Dr. Jake Prescott works out of the Sacramento General ER. He is compiling his research on the tobacco industry for his final paper. Two patients are wheeled into the ER from a home invasion. One of the patients is his wife Sara. Sara was at home with their daughter when two men attacked searching for Jake. Jake saves the life of one of the two invaders before he realizes that his daughter is missing. Unfortunately, Jake has no idea why they are holding her hostage or what they could possibly want from him. Jake turns to a former patient, Terry Luther, who is a private investigator for help. Together they must find his daughter before time runs out.

LETHAL CURE does have a couple of flaws. The majority of them are typical first book flaws; hence, as Popke continues writing they should solve themselves. The book contained one major problem, which might not correct itself simply through more practice. That is the issue of character motivation. Because the book focuses primarily on Jake, he is obviously the most developed character. Unfortunately, this leaves a lot of character questions. For example, why was Tony willing to risk his life to help Jake out? The book pushes the idea that they were the closest of friends; yet, that did not seem realistic. Jake does not seem to be incredibly close friends with him – in fact they barely interact together. In addition, every time Tony tries to talk with him, Jake tells him to back off.

On the positive side, the main plot is pretty taut. There are not many superfluous details or boring details. The medical facts were not detailed enough to go over the reader’s head but not dumb-downed for the reader. Some of the abbreviations used in the hospital could have been better explained but they were not vital to the plot. Once Popke has the chance to correct the minor flaws within his work, he will be an author to contend with in the medical thriller genre.

LETHAL CURE is Kurt Popke’s first book.
