Molly Blume is a freelance reporter working in Los Angles. While checking the police reports on her daily round she notices the vandalization of a home in the neighborhood where she grew up. The report says thrown pumpkins and eggs. Since this is close to Halloween she remembers a home on her street that was dark and foreboding. All the neighborhood children told scary stories about it and called it the dungeon. Molly assumes this is the house that has been hit.

Later while talking to her sister, who still lives in the neighborhood she discovers that a community groups known as HARP (Historic Architect Restoration and Preservation) society are causing quite an uproar in the neighborhood. The dungeon is not the vandalized home but another respectable house. The group is trying to keep the houses in the area in the time periods in which they were built. Not all homeowners are thrilled with being told how they can and cannot remodel their homes.

When the vandalism escalates to shots fired into a home and then a house burned Molly realizes something more is going on. Murder soon follows and Molly is asked by the mans surviving family to help check into what is going on.

This story was very suspenseful as well as educational in respect to the architectural aspects involved. I loved the character Molly and enjoyed her interaction with her family and friends. It was very real to me.

The plot was just complex enough to keep me guessing with an ending that surprised and pleased me.
