Attorney Andy Carpenter became famous when he appealed the original trial and, won a new trial for a man on deathıs row. He went on to win the second trial. His father died around the same time leaving him a millionaire several times over. The money and fame has allowed Andy the leisure to turn down new cases until he finds something to really interest him, problem is  he just canıt seem to find something to break his ³lawyerıs block.² (inside front jacket)

His significant other and investigator is Laurie.  Laurie began as a cop, but she discovered her partner, Alex Dorsey was dishonest. When the knowledge of his crimes finally became too much for her she had to go to Internal Affairs. The rest of the department (all ranks) pulled up the blue wall put Laurie on the other side. As a result all her partner got was a reprimand, so  Laurie quit and went private.

While Andy is wasting away his time with sports and interviews with charities who want his money he learns a manıs decapitated body is found‹it is Laurieıs former partner. A day or so after that a man named Geoffrey Stynes keeps an appointment with Carpenter; he tells him that there is a chance he might be arrested in a few days and wants to hire a lawyer with a good reputation for winning difficult cases. After asking for, and receiving a dollar retainer from Stynes, Andy agrees to listen to him, but makes no promises to keep him as a client. The dollar will seal the lawyer-client relationship. Mr. Stynes describes minute by minute, step by step, the murder of Alex Dorsey‹Andy refuses the case.

Next day he reads that a different man has been arrested for the crime. He cannot in good conscience break client privilege which means (to him) that he must represent and try to gain an acquittal for this innocent in custody. He does. The next person arrested is Laurie!!!! Now the trouble really begins. Again the client privilege has to be maintained while knowing she was put in the frame.

He, Laurie, Moses, another PI, and Kevin, his sometime law associate, must rush to find the real murderer. Rosenfelt maintains the tension and sense of urgency throughout the rest of the book until an exciting conclusion. It is tightly plotted and very well written. The characters are believable, likeable and well drawn. On the whole it is a very good read.
