THE DELICATE STORM is the second book featuring Detectives John Cardinal and Lise Delorme. A freak warm front has arrived to Algonquin Bay causing the snow to begin melting and a feeling of spring in the air. Cardinal’s life is difficult, his father refuses to go to doctors and his wife is manic-depressive; however, right now she is pretty balanced. Cardinal finds something else to worry about as the murder rate increases quickly. The first body is found in pieces and strewn around as though eaten by bears. It quickly becomes apparent that the man was murdered before the body was eaten. The man’s identity remains a confused mess as the ID found sends them down a dead end. The next body is that of a local doctor. Delorme is assigned this case and has some suspects including a stalker/ boyfriend; yet, she quickly realizes that her case and Cardinal’s are related. Both murders are related to events from the 1970s that occurred in Toronto. Everywhere Delorme and Cardinal turn someone or something blocks the path toward the truth. Delorme and Cardinal must solve these two murders before the truth disappears forever.

The Liberation Front and other events that occurred in the 1970s were fascinating. Although, it is easy to remember the events of the 1960s and 1970s that occurred in America, it can be difficult to remember that similar events did occur in other countries. The events referred to in this book were purely fictional; yet, such incidents can occur anywhere and everywhere. No country is safe from homegrown terrorism and kidnapping. It is how the country reacts to these threats, which demonstrate a country’s strength. As Cardinal and Delorme quickly discover, the desire to keep the past hidden is a strong emotion in both individuals and governments.

THE DELICATE STORM is not a simple murder case with a simple solution. The history explaining the murders that occurred complicates the situation as well as influences the system around them. THE DELICATE STORM requires its reader to follow the plot down long and at times confusing roads until the end where everything makes sense; this book requires an active participant not a passive reader.
