A firebreak is a small fire set in front of a larger one that's designed to destroy the fuel and stop the larger blaze. When Frank Elkins and Ralph Wiss muff a robbery at the hunting lodge of a dot.com billionaire, they create a firebreak that warns Paxton Marino of the holes in the security system guarding his valuable paintings. Elkins and Wiss are forced to make a second attempt to steal the paintings when their partners in the busted heist are arrested and threaten to expose them. Bob and Harry want money for bail, then plan to disappear before their case comes to trial. Elkins and Wiss had better comply with their demands, even though the security around the lodge is now practically impenetrable, or they'll be going up river too.

Elkins and Wiss call on master thief Parker for help. Parker's interested in their scheme, but he has troubles of his own right now. Someone wants him dead. He's knocked off one assassin in his lakeside home, and now an elderly couple is watching his place, their job to detonate a bomb the minute he walks into his house. Finding out who's behind this mischief takes up much of Parker's time. In between visits to old enemies, Parker plans the heist with Elkins, Wiss, and their new partner, Larry Lloyd. An electronics genius and ex-con, Lloyd is on probation but still gunning for his cheating ex-business partner. He's the weak link in the group, but because of his skill at disarming electronic devices, he's needed to break through Marino's new security system. Unknown to everyone, there's a Secret Service agent who's just as interested in Marino's paintings as the millionaire and the thieves.

Firebreak is as hot and unpredictable as its title. The author deals in non-stop action played out by tough, no nonsense men who take their thieving seriously. With a plot that sizzles, characters that nobody can trust, and a twisty ending to die for, Firebreak will be a one-sitting read for fans of the incomparable Richard Stark.
