Andy Carpenter is really a very nice lawyer, hard as he tries to hide it.  He loves his Dad, he loves his dog, and he thinks he might love his estranged wife, Nicole, but he isn't absolutely certain. He also loves practising law and he is very good at it, even if at least one of his clients pays him in produce.

When his father, a retired prosecutor, asks him to take on the appeal of one Willie Miller, now on death row, even though the elder Carpenter was the lawyer responsible for putting him there, Andy feels he must oblige.  He feels doubly obligated when his father promptly drops dead at a Yankee game, leaving Andy both bereaved and the heir to an unexpected  23 million dollars.

As he looks into the Miller case, Andy becomes more and more convinced that his client was framed for the murder of a journalist, Denise McGregor.  He is also disturbed by the suspicion that his father and his unexplained wealth are somehow connected to the frameup.  As he tries to work his way to the solution, someone is trying just as hard to make him back away.

The plot line is not the strong point here and the reader will get to the answer well before Andy does.  But the book is remarkably assured for a first novel, and Andy's voice, his wise-cracking style, a bit reminiscent of Archie Goodwin, and his clear exposition of certain points of law make this a fast, breezy, and enjoyable summer read. Rosenfelt has laid a sound basis for a continuing series and it will be interesting to see how the secondary characters, among them Laurie the private investigator, Kevin the laundromat lawyer, and Tara the Golden Retriever develop.
