Who says one cannot write a serious courtroom drama and make it funny at the same time? Not David Rosenfelt. In his Edgar-nominated debut, the author introduces Andy Carpenter, a defense attorney from Paterson, New Jersey, who knows how to get things done in favor of his clients. If he can have some fun, while helping the defendants, that makes it even better. In OPEN AND SHUT, he is going to need his wits in order to save a man in Death Row, sentenced for the murder of a newspaper reporter. What makes this case so unique is that Anthony is doing the case as a favor for his father, a retired District Attorney for Passaic County. Seven years ago, Nelson Carpenter convicted Willie Miller in the murder of Denise McGregor. He does not explain the why to his son, only that he needs to help this man. Unfortunately, before the retrial even begins, Nelson dies naturally of a heart attack. It is with the death of Mr. Carpenter that things start coming into place including a thirty-five-year-old conspiracy. There are those who want to continue to leave things quiet.

One aspect that makes this book so noteworthy is that it is a well-structured murder mystery with unexpected twists and turns. One cannot help themselves like the main character as well as the supporting players. It is a funny book without getting into slapstick and the characters grow on you. This book is a great start in an original series. It deserves the highest possible recommendation.
