It has been almost twenty years since Jack Sawyer traveled to the fantastic faraway land known as the Territories. When he was twelve, his mother took him to a beach front hotel where she expects to die of cancer. Feeling powerless to help her, Jack walks the beach that surrounds the inn and is befriended by a blind musician with a story to tell. Speedy Parker claims to know the boy since he was very small and that he knows how to save Lily Cavanaugh Sawyer. In a parallel universe, the aging actress's alternate or "twinner"’ is a queen dying of an unknown ailment. Anything that happens on Earth affects the Territories and vice versa. The only chance the women have for survival is a magical talisman located in a dark area of the fantastic world. Jack is the only one who can get there and the only hope they have to save both worlds. There were forces that tried to stop the boy with his quest, but they failed. Good prevailed over evil and everything is right in both universes. Unfortunately, the lad has no memory of the big adventure he once had.

Two decades later, Jack is a retired detective from the LAPD and is now living in a rural town in Wisconsin. He has lived an isolated life, lost in his books and music. For several months, he has been having waking nightmares regarding the Territories and he has no idea why. Someone is trying to give him a message, but the former cop does not understand the forces that are in work.

A serial killer has been tormenting the town. Children have been disappearing and found mutilated in isolated areas. Everyone is living in fear and is afraid of what could happen next. When Tyler Marshall is kidnapped, the police get desperate and recruit Jack to help them. In his past life as a cop, Jack had a high closure rate due to his intense investigative skills and an intuitive sixth sense that helps him uncover mysteries. This case is totally different. The killer, known as The Fisherman, wants Jack and wants him to join him back in the Territories. Tyler and his mother are important figures in the alternate world and Jack needs to return to the unknown. In the end, his life will be forever changed.

With the assistance of Peter Straub, Stephen King expands his Dark Tower saga by providing answers to questions begun in the Gunslinger series and the teasers placed in some of his novels such as INSOMNIA and HEARTS IN ATLANTIS. The authors have fun writing this novel by using a unique narrative device that seems like a jester telling a story. They take us back to this fantastic world filled with action, adventure and suspense. Both authors' strong suits are featured in the tale leaving readers craving for more. It is not essential to read THE TALISMAN to enjoy oneself. Why deprive yourself? What are you waiting for? Treat yourself today.
