Detective Marshall "Mars" Bahr of the Minneapolis Police Department is preparing to move on to a new aspect of his career. He and his capable assistant, Nettie, are leaving Homicide Division's First Response Unit to take up new positions at the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. With an incompetent new Chief of Police on the job, Mars isn't sorry to be going. However, it appears that there will be one more case for him to solve before leaving.

The estranged wife of a professional basketball player is found murdered in their home. Terri Jackman was in the process of divorcing Tayron "T-Jack" Jackman. T-Jack is unfriendly, unpopular with the fans and players alike and arrogant. No one likes him, least of all his soon-to-be former in-laws. In fact, Terri's wealthy father is paying T-Jack $100 million to induce him to go through with the divorce and give Terri custody of their daughter. Terri was killed when T-Jack was meeting with her father and their lawyers. Terri' s dad, Duke, discovered the body, had a heart attack and died. Everyone blames T-Jack and Mars needs to find out how he made it happen.

Time constraints and the cluelessness of the new Chief combine to hamper Mars in the task. Terri's mother is appealing to Mars to stay and find the evidence that T-Jack is responsible, however, Mars has to leave his current position in less than two weeks. In addition to the continuing pressures of his job, Mars is having problems with his ex-wife. Mars is especially close to their precocious eleven-year old son, Chris. Now suddenly Chris seems to have problems and Mars has to do something he avoids at all costs - have a confrontation with Denise.

Although the author points to the "alleged murderer" from the beginning of the book, the mystery is how the crime was committed, not so much who committed the crime. In the third book in the series, Mars continues to be the honest, morally upright man that we met in the first two books. We should hope that policemen are as honest as Mars. In his dealings with his family, his friends and the public, Mars always does the right thing. The author has more than one card up her sleeve and in the unraveling of the crime and the commission, there is still one big surprise waiting for the reader. It has a very satisfying ending. I look forward to more Mars and Nettie.
