An attempted kidnapping of Richard Beck as he leaves his small Massachusetts college to go home for the weekend, goes awry. Reacher kills the kidnappers, the bodyguards, and accidentally shoots a local cop, but he saves the boy. Richard convinces Reacher to take him all the way home, to a secluded estate on the Maine coast, so he does.

But the story really started ten years earlier when Jack Reacher killed Quinn, a rogue army intelligence officer who killed one of Reacher's subordinates and sold secret plans to foreign agents. But one winter's night, in Boston, while walking through the crowds exiting Symphony Hall, Reacher sees Quinn.

Reacher, the loner, must work through channels to find the connection between Quinn and Richard's father, Zachary Beck, the rug merchant. Reacher's main goal is to destroy Quinn this time. He also has to try and find a DEA agent who had been infiltrated into the compound but had gone missing, and his own personal sense of justice makes him want to try and save Mrs. Beck and Richard from any consequences of Zachary's actions.

This is a fast-paced violent novel. Jack Reacher is the the ultimate loner with a finely developed sense of justice and morality. But he will use any means to make sure of the right outcome. He travels light...no luggage, no fixed address, gets the job done and goes on his way. A Lone Ranger for the 21st century.
