In this book Lara travels to Bangkok to meet up with her significant other's college-age daughter, Jennifer, and Jennifer's boyfriend Chat Chaiwong. Jennifer and Chat have been traveling through Southeast Asia for a couple of months. Lara and Jennifer stay with Chat's family in Bangkok. The Chaiwongs are a wealthy family with an international trading business, and their home is a delight that Lara's training in antiques and design help her appreciate.

Lara's business partner and ex-husband Clive asks her to try and locate dealer Will Beauchamp while she is in Thailand. He hasn't been heard from in months and his wife and handicapped daughter are in dire straights without him. Lara's investigation doesn't find much, but it seems that Beauchamp's disappearance might have had something to do with the case of Helen Ford, who lived in Bangkok in the fifties and went to jail for the murder of her husband. Beauchamp also sent his wife a couple of amulets of Buddha, one of which is broken, which seem to tie into the mystery.

Hamilton has an excellent style, smooth and flowing. She has a talent for plots and characterization, and fully exploits her talent for describing a locale and the culture. The Thai Amulet is not necessarily the best in the series, but it is a good book. Recommended.
