In 1935, Willie Thompson Sr. listened to the Joe Lewis boxing match. He was content with staying in his neighborhood, minding his own business, listening to the fights and drinking beer. Unemployment gave Willie more time to drink. The reason for not working was because it was the Depression and jobs were hard to keep. Willie thought he was let go because he was black but James (his son) knew his father's drinking also hurt his ability to keep a job. Bills were left unpaid.

James and some of his friends became involved with activities that forced him to eventually work as a pickup man. When his girlfriend Kimberly became pregnant, they were married. Monroe Thompson was the result of this union. Monroe spent time out in the streets, running numbers. He soon learned that his world of books and learning were more interesting and safer than his father's life.

Here are three generations of men. Each generation is so different yet have so many similarities. This story focuses mainly on the 2nd and 3rd generation and the conflict between choices. Some of the characters did not like the way things were done but the bottom line was that they did get results. Monroe has a younger brother who always is on the outside of James' affection. There are two different wars occurring, the moblike gangland wars and the war in their own family: father against son.

First novel of author.
