2059 New York. A wealthy man, celebrating his birthday among family and friends, is handed a glass of champagne by a server. He drinks it and dies.

Lt. Eve Dallas is just back from a two week holiday to find that Peabody, her assistant, has cleared her desk, so Eve gives Peabody a cold case to work on when nothing else is happening, but of course they are both called to the scene of the death of Walter Pettibone. Years before, Eve had testified against a poisoner, Julianna Dunne, who is now out on parole and wants to get even. Eve is the only person to have outwitted Dunne.

Dunne leads Eve on a chase which leads back to Dallas, back to the time when an unnamed small girl was found in the street, covered with blood, and where Eve has to meet her past. But now Eve is no longer alone and the confrontation only makes her stronger.

All the usual suspects, and some new ones, make this an enjoyable book to take along on a plane trip. Roarke helps Dallas realize that she is no longer that lost child. Peabody's strange parents come for a visit. Mavis and Leonardo make their cameo appearances as expected. Robb is like the energizer bunny...the "...in Death" series just seems to keep going and going and...going without losing any energy.
