Sam Chase is a Special Agent for the Department of Justice in the state of California. Her job is to assist local law enforcement agencies around the state in trying to capture serial killers. Her most celebrated case involved a man named Charlie Sloan, who was recently executed for the murders of several young women around the state. Now, somebody is continuing the killings using Sloaneís unique signature. Could Sam had made a mistake and have the wrong man executed or is this the work of a devious copycat? Also, what key does Samís past hold onto this?

Girardís strength in this book is the time the author spends developing her main characters such as Samís angst. She left her past behind and made a new life for herself in California. When her sister was killed in a car accident nine years ago, she got custody of her twin nephews. Her relationship with them is not easy but she is doing her best. The one thing that she is sure of is that she loves them and will do whatever it takes to save and protect them, even if it involves telling the family secret. She is doing the best she can but she has trouble opening up to people. It is difficult for her to trust anyone and the author does a good job conveying that problem. There is also someone at work with a bone to pick with the special agent. If she is not careful her career as well as her life will be put in jeopardy.

Chasing Darkness is a pleasant surprise with the storyís unexpected twist and turns. Many aspects of the book are predictable but the climax is something else. It will leave readers with their jaws open. The characters act like real individuals where the reader cares what their fates will be. This book is a good work by Danielle Girardís that will leave fans for more. If you like this book, try her first novel, Savage Art, to see how well the author is moving up in the genre. She is an author worth watching.
