How would you react if you'd discovered someone was going around town impersonating you, acting in ways you would never act? At best it would be unsettling, at worst, you could suffer grievous damage to your reputation and to your livelihood.

It's a story rooted in today's concerns about the way in which, through the use of computers and greed, too much of our individual private selves are vulnerable to theft and misuse. Experienced detective Sharon McCone, now grown enough in her business to employ several operatives and office people--and quite an interesting group it is--has become something of an important person in San Francisco. She's invited to do television appearances. She makes speeches at professional meetings, and people are talking about her, a successful business woman. But now, someone is going about passing herself off as private detective, Sharon McCone.

Now McCone, busy juggling several important cases, begins to get telephone calls about appointments she never made, about orders she never placed, and about dates with men she doesn't know. What's even more unsettling, her lover, confidant and very good friend, Hy Ripinsky, out of town on business hasn't called in several days, and his company isn't being forthcoming.

Never stale, always with strong writing, Muller has fashioned another exceptional novel. Even though she's been writing about Sharon McCone for years, McCone's development and Muller's story-telling talent have kept the P.I. fresh and interesting. Muller's sense of intrigue, her attention to fascinating detail and her sense of pace, make this story one that will hold a reader's attention from start to finish.

The characters are interesting, especially those now employed in McCone's agency, and the dialogue is crisp. It has been a real pleasure to track McCone and Muller's writing through the several years of successful novels, and While Other People Sleep is a worthy addition to the line.
