Another in Linda Grant's outstanding Catherine Sayler series. Grant has written a searing indictment of sexual harassment and its potential consequences in the organizational work place. San Francisco investigator Catherine Sayler is hired to ferret out the perpetrator of obscene jokes and lewd messages being circulated via the internal computer network of a corporation which has just merged with another in the ongoing wars of Silicone Valley. Grant appropriately balances the differences between corporate managers who are at least aware of the potential damage of such activities and others who condone and even encourage harassment. Sexual politics, as it's sometimes referred to, is much more than innocent pranks. As Grant reveals, harassment is about control, domination, and sometimes, brutal murder. There is a nice balance in this book between the psychological brutalization of the women in the story and the plot, which is strong enough to carry this load. Grant is a good writer and while I recommend this book to anyone interested in mystery fiction and our modern social problems, it is not light-weight escapist reading.
