Melanie Travis -- dog fancier, mother, special needs tutor -- has her hands full. Not that that's unusual; Melanie's hands are usually full, between work, her son Davey, her beloved Poodles, and what she has of a personal life. As readers of this delightful series know, Melanie's former fiance, Sam, who had walked out on her, is back, and Melanie can't quite decide whether she should pick up where they left off.

Usually Melanie's Aunt Peg is the relative who complicates her life, but this time it's her Aunt Rose who drops a problem in her lap. Someone has donated a Dachshund puppy to be auctioned off for charity. Aunt Rose is the puppy's temporary custodian and can't cope, so Melanie finds herself foster mother to little Dox. At Aunt Peg's insistence, she also finds herself looking into how this puppy ended up being offered as a prize to the highest bidder, something no responsible breeder would allow.

The puppy and the investigation into its origins would be more than enough to keep Melanie occupied, but she also has to contend with her ex-husband's renewed interest in being a father to their son. Melanie tries to tell herself this is a good thing, but when the ex shows up with a pony he's bought for Davey, and that's only the beginning of the extravagant gifts, she has to wonder if her son is going to end up going to the highest bidder himself.

All this and a reporter who is dogging (as it were) Melanie's footsteps. And a new girlfriend in her ex-husband's life of whom she can't help being a little jealous. Not because of this woman's relationship with the ex, but because she's becoming a part of Davey's life. Oh, yes, and then there's the stalker. Melanie doesn't know who is watching her, but someone is.

HOT DOG is a delightful romp of a book, as much fun as puppy and every bit as entertaining. Berenson knows dogs and she knows how to tell a great story, a winning combination that once again has resulted in a best of breed.
