Crime can be found everywhere. Newly minted Sports Agent Myron Bolitar, teetering on the edge of becoming a big-time agent, finds his way blocked by some people who are not above playing a little rough to get what they want. In fact, some of them seem to enjoy beating on people.

Myron has his first really big-time client, a quarterback who is definitely destined for a stellar career, and who's in a hurry. Myron is not exactly standing on the brakes, but there are speed bumps ahead. The first one is a telephone call from the quarterback's girlfriend who's supposed to be dead. Things seem to go out of control thereafter.

Among the charming and risible elements of author Coben's books are the cast of characters he has assembled to aid ex-basketballer Agent Bolitar. Most detectives, private or amateur, seem to have a helper, or a confidant, someone to talk to, to bounce ideas around with. Bolitar has all these and more. His financial wizard is a deadly man named Win whom you don't really want to meet, even in a sunny street; he has two right hands in the office, both apparently female; he has a knock-out, gorgeous writer-sweetheart with whom he seems to fight a lot, and there's his living arrangement. Thirty-something successful Myron Bolitar still lives at home--with his parents.

The ideas, the zings, the quips, fly thickly over this ground while Bolitar and company endeavor to solve a murder, maintain a semblance of dignity and pride, and solve the riddle. This is rich entertainment, full of I-wish-I'd-thought-of-that comebacks. Bolitar is a complicated character so you are never certain of his reaction in a given situation. A fine, worthwhile novel.
