In the summer of 1897 word reached Seattle, and the rest of the United States, that gold had been discovered in the Klondike, an area of Alaska along the common border with the Canadian Territory called the Yukon. It set off a major gold rush.

Controversy arose over the ways in which Canadian and U.S. authorities handled the enormous sudden influx of prospectors. Many prospered, but there was considerable lawlessness and some people were broken by the hard conditions; some died in the terrible winters, others were murdered, and some just disappeared. About a hundred years later, there is controversy over the discovery of oil on the North Slope, treatment of the native peoples, and the management of the lands, animals, fish and fowl.

Take all these elements, personalize them with individuals attached in various ways to these issues, add a sprinkling of family disagreement and an incredible discovery. Then inject Alaska State Trooper Alex Jensen into the Canadian investigation of a murder. Now you have all the ingredients of this fascinating, absorbing mystery.

Whether you've ever been to Alaska or visited the wilds of the lower forty-eight, this is a terrific novel. Henry's characters, as always, are well-developed and interesting to be with. The scenery and the locales are interesting in themselves, and the scenes in a raging blizzard are simply outstanding. This one is a real winner, written by an author who knows her territory, in her usual, careful, winning style.
