The Last Temptation marks the third novel featuring former criminal profiler Tony Hill and Detective Chief Inspector Carol Jordan. These two have gone through a lot while tracking serial killers dampening their chances of starting a relationship. Hill is tortured by what he has seen during his time at his job and has trouble opening himself to love. Carol likes to work with Hill and wishes their relationship could be a whole lot more but she is holding no illusions of it happening. Two years have passed since The Wire in the Blood and they have not been together in all that time. Now Carol is moving forward in her career. She has the opportunity to work on a special undercover assignment. If she succeeds in this mission she will be able to write he own ticket in her law enforcement career.

The police have targeting a businessman named Tadeusz Radecki who is wanted by law enforcement for drug charges as well as human smuggling. Radeckiís girlfriend was killed in unusual circumstances and she was the spitting image of Carol Jordan. The police plan on using her looks as an advantage in order to try to trip up Tadeusz and bring his to justice. Becoming Caroline Jackson, Jordan gets close to this criminal mastermind unaware of what is at stake. There are dangerous elements involved within this operation for which Carol is not privy to. By the time the operation is over, things will never be the same.

On an unrelated front there is a serial killer working in Europe. He is targeting clinical psychologist and murdering them in ways reminiscent of Nazi concentration camps. Petra Becker, a German police officer, and Marijke von Hasselt, a Dutch brigadier, met in a gay police officer message board and discovered a chilling connection to these murders. Unfortunately, they are in the bottom hierarch in the police force and no one would take them seriously. Petra is Carolís handler in her undercover job in Germany and they both manage to convince Tony Hill to help them profile this serial killer. Tony decides to go to Germany an unwittingly start a chain of events.

The two case will overlap putting them Carol and Tony in danger. One wrong move could put both their lives in jeopardy.

McDermid creates an intense and suspenseful novel that would leave dents on the bookís cover. This particular serial killer is more convincing than the authorís previous novel, Killing the Shadows. The author is comfortable with Tony Hill and Carol Jordan and develops them well. The storyís conclusion is good; unfortunately it will be a while before we see them again. McDermidís next novel will be a non-series standalone. One word of warning with this particular book, do not read it if you are planning to read The Wire in the Blood. The author provides too much information in The Last Temptation that reading the previous novel would seem pointless. Consider yourselves warned.
