In England in the 1820's very few woman were independent of their husbands and fathers; especially women of the aristocracy. Lady Jessica Carville, was an exception. Lady Jessica, vowing not to marry after suffering an unhappy love affair, has made a life for herself as a dealer in antiquities and fine art. As the daughter of an earl, she was criticized for being "in trade", but she was happy with her life. That was all to change when Hugo, Lord Duran returned to England.

Hugo returned from India, in trouble as usual. Unjustly imprisoned by the ruler of a distant province, Hugo was able to convince the nazim to let him try to recover the golden leopard statute stolen by another Englishman. The statute was a symbol of the ruler's dynasty and to lose it was to invite the overthrow of the throne. However, his freedom came with a price, for the assassin, Shivaji, is traveling with Hugo to ensure his cooperation.

Hugo thinks to manipulate Jessica into helping him, but she wants something from him as well. They form a partnership to recover the leopard for Hugo and to get rid of a troublesome brother-in-law for Jessica.

The novel is a romantic adventure tale set at the time of the vast British Empire and the East India Company. Written in a witty, light hearted style, the adventures of the dashing Hugo and the lovely Jessica is a fun and fast-paced, if predictable story.
