Originally published as Silent Playgrounds, Listen to the Shadows is Danuta Reah's first novel. It is a suspenseful story in which the past returns and makes an ugly comeback. It is filled with thrills and chills with a clever twist at story's end. This book is an impressive first novel from an already well-established writer.

Listen to the Shadows is the story of Suzanne Milner, a clinical researcher. One day, she was jogging near a mill called Shepherd's Wheel where she believes she spots Ashley Reid, one of the case studies she is interviewing. She does not think much about it and continues exercising until she gets home. Shortly thereafter, she learns that her next-door neighbor's daughter is missing as well as her baby sitter, Emma. Suzanne goes back to the water mill and discovers Emma's body at the bottom of the wheel. The police manage to find Lucy but cannot get a straight answer from her.

Suzanne has been completely distrustful of the police after an incident involving her little brother many years ago. Detective Inspector Steve McCarthy, Detective Constable Tina Barraclough and Detective Sergeant Pete Corvin are going to be working the case. Together they will discover inconsistencies in the baby sitter's life as well as some family secrets that will shed light on the investigation.

Danuta Reah's novel is not an easy read, but it is clearly satisfying. The characters are well developed and one needs to take their time in getting to know each one of them. The story's tone is dark and suspenseful where anything can happen at any moment. If you are in the mood for a good psychological thriller this is a good place to begin. If you want to enhance your reading enjoyment, try visiting the author's official web site. She provides pictures of the locales in the book helping to assist in the visual imagery in the book. It is worth the visit.
