Repairman Jack is a shadowy figure who lives in New York and helps people in trouble. He seems not to have a last name, nor does he have a driver's license or social security number, nor does he pay tax. Jack and his lover, Gia, are at a typical New York party when one of the partygoers decides to go and see a new psychic living in Queens. Jack and Gia go along with the other couple, but when they get to the door of Menelaus Manor, a mysterious Indian woman walking a dog warns Gia not to enter the house which is now home to a pair of brothers claiming to be mediums. There is a deep rumble that shakes the house, but they enter anyway. Jack later explains all the tricks to Gia. As a teenager, he had worked for a medium

Jack is seated in his favorite bar one day when a man comes to him and tells him that he is afraid his half-brother is in trouble and asks Jack to keep an eye on Eli Bellitto for the next 3 nights. Jack agrees, and follows Eli after he closes his strange, Shurio Coppe, that night. Eli tries to abduct a small boy, but Jack rescues the child and puts Eli and his companion in the hospital.

Eli is a member of "The Circle" A group of men who purport to be hundreds of years old and who stay young by periodically killing a child and eating its heart. The earthquake in Astoria was caused by the shade of a long dead child who was sacrificed by the circle and buried in the cellar of the house.

Lyle and Charlie Kenton hire Jack to help them discover what is causing the real psychic manifestations in their house. After all, they make a good living out of scamming people and Lyle, or Ifason as he is known professionally, doesn't really believe in cosmic forces. Chalrie, the younger brother, a born-again Christian, is less sceptical. All Lyle wants to do is to become the most important psychic in New York City. There are some very funny scenes, amid the horror, of Jack and Lyle dealing with another NY psychic.

The writer does a good job in revealing the secrets of phony psychics and creating endearing characters. This is the sixth in a series about which I have heard nothing but praise. The writing is slick. The story moves along, but the particular mixture of mysticism and mystery does not appeal to this reader.
