The Falls is the 14th book in a best selling series written by Scottish author, Ian Rankin. Detective Inspector Rebus is back investigating the mysterious disappearance of Phillipa Balfour, daughter of a wealthy banker. It is not the girl's nature to go missing for several days and her family is worried. The only clues that the police have is that Phillipa was corresponding electronically with someone known only as Quiz Master in a computer role playing game. Detective Siobhan Clarke decides to follow up on that lead and play the same game as Ms. Balfour. On another related front there are miniature coffins popping out of Rebus's jurisdiction with a wooden doll placed inside. What is disturbing is that the coffins were found after the discovery of a woman's body. It has been going on for years and no answer has come out of it yet. The book then separates into two separate plots involving Rebus's investigation as well as Clarke's. Clarke will be busy working the Quiz Master's riddles in order to find out what happened to Phillipa. Did she run away or was she murdered? Who is the Quiz Master and what does he know about the girl's disappearance? Rebus will be befriending a museum curator who knows the history of the coffins and has an idea as to the killings. The book is well written taking two complex plots and integrating them into one, once the truth about Phillipa is revealed. There are several characters in this book whom the author spends time with in order to flesh them out. This book gives the appearance that Rankin might be considering phasing out Detective Rebus in support of the other players. Only time will tell. You do not need to know Inspector Rebus in order to enjoy this book so give it a try.
