In Wednesdayís Child, Robinson does not waste anytime initiating the bookís tense mood.. At the start of Chapter One, Inspector Banks is at the home of Brenda Scupham investigating the kidnapping of her daughter, Gemma. Her mother tells her how a Mr. Brown and a Ms. Peterson showed her a badge claiming to be from a child protective service. They claimed that they had received complaints about her ability as a mother and needed to take Gemma into protective custody. Ms. Scupham did not want to cause any trouble thinking that she could resolve it by the next night. When she learns that Gemma was not with CPS she contacted the police.

Robinson writes a suspenseful story where every second that the characters take count. While searching for Gemma they encounter a decomposing body believing that it might be the girl. They discover that the victim is a gardener to an influential man in town. Banks investigate this death as well as continuing the search for Ms. Scupham little girl discovering that the two cases might be related. Everyone involve in the investigation has a personal stake in finding the girl and the author does his best to prolong the anxiety.

It is a great kidnapping story where aside from the police search the author focuses on the childís mother and stepfather. Robinson gives us insights on these two characters leading to the events of the kidnapping. This transgression is one of the biggest fears in anyoneís family. The story is well constructed and it is probably one of Peter Robinsonís best novels. The author handles this delicate crime beautifully and provides a powerful ending. Wednesdayís Child is a definite canít miss.
