The historic Sentier district was once filled with fashionable mansions, but it has now gone downhill and is one of the more sleazy areas. Aimée Leduc is drawn to the area when a woman tells her that she knew Aimée's long-disappeared mother.

She learns that the two women were in prison together and that her mother was a member of a terrorist organisation. However, the woman is suddenly murdered and Aimée finds herself caught up with resurgent terrorists. Can she solve the mystery and discover what happened to her mother?

Firstly, it must be said that Black creates a tremendous sense of place in Murder In The Sentier’. Paris is brought alive, although in this case, we are seeing its sordid, dark side rather than the glorious, lively picture normally created. Black spends a lot of time making the novel seem authentic, adding French phrases and detailed descriptions.

Aimée Leduc is an immediately likeable character, with Black including some wry humour and moments of levity to reduce the grimness of the plot, with its themes of murder and terrorism. Black also tries to make her characters detailed, spending a lot of time developing them.

As for the plot itself, it was an interesting tale, filled with twists and new revelations. It did not ring quite true to me that people would be so reticent regarding Aimée's mother, but other than that, I found it to be very enjoyable and easily readable. If you are a fan of novels set in places other than the UK or the US, Murder In The Sentier’ is worth a read!
