One day, when she was twelve years old, Sandy Meyer learned that she was adopted. As she grew up, that fact became more and more omnipresent in her mind. Who was she, really? Who was her mother, and most important of all, why had her mother abandoned her? Now sixteen and entering her senior year of high school, she decides to try to answer the questions and find out who her parents are, provoked at last by one solitary and perplexing clue.

The novel is set in 1949 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Sandy Meyer is a bright, pleasant student of Central high school. The school, the city and a time that is gone forever, limned in the golden light of nostalgia, particularly for those who still remember that time. The city and the school are strongly evoked in this interesting tale. Sandy conducts her search without the knowledge of her adoptive parents or most of her classmates. Interspersed with Sandy's odyssey and her interaction with characters important to the plot, are scenes of her teen-aged year. And while the tale turns tedious at times, the reader will be drawn on by the sure knowledge that some unseen, unnamed evil lurks around the next corner. West builds and maintains suspense well and in the bargain provides an entertaining insight into the daily lives of Sandy, some of her goofy neighbors, and of Saint Paul as it was then, and will never be again.
