Rochelle Baxter had everything to live for. The first ever show of her paintings was set to open at Dierdre Canfield's gallery in Bisbee, Arizona. But a few hours after leaving the gallery, Shelly is found dead in her home. And the trail to her next-of-kin leads directly to the Washington State Attorney General's office, who, when they find out that Latisha Wall has been murdered in some hick community in Arizona, with a female sheriff, in the person of Joanna Brady, they immediately start giving orders.

Brady is miffed that Washington doesn't think Cochise County has the ability to deal with murder, and that they want to send a special investigator to "help" her. When J. P. Beaumont shows up, she treats him very coldly. Beau doesn't want to be in Bisbee either. His second wife, the one he shot and killed on their wedding day, had been a serial killer whose home was in that very same Arizona hamlet.

Why was Wall, an ex-prison guard, in the witness protection program of another state? If Brady could find that out, then the case would be solved. She finally gives in and allows Beaumont into the inner circle. Wall was killed by using a little known but very common poison, available anywhere. The book is as much about protection from the cylinders that power automobile airbags as about Joanna's relationship with her daughter and new husband, and the tension between Brady and Beaumont.

I have never warmed to Beau. He seemed like a pale west coast imitation of Scudder, but I have always liked the Brady books, even though I may have missed a couple here and there (like the one in which Joanna and Butch get married). This is a good addition to both series. And perhaps, I will try the J. P. Beaumont books again when I have time.
