Brenda Strange is a lawyer who almost died in a shooting spree at her office in New Jersey. It takes her months to recover both physically and emotionally and finally her partner Tina suggests they fulfil their dream ofowning a summer house down in Florida.

House hunting in the Port of Tampa, Brenda connects with the first house she sees, Malfour House, an old property in an exclusive island residential area. It's at Malfour that Brenda begins to realise that as a result of her near death experience, she has been given the ability to see the dead. At first she can only smell smoke that no one else can but later she begins to see and hear the long dead inhabitants of the house.

There are two cases intertwined in this novel. One is that of Brenda discovering what happened in life to the ghosts she can see and to unearth the reason why they are haunting her. The second is to find out, after a number of disturbing events, who is attempting to scare her and Tina out of their lovely home. The cases collide in a dramatic conclusion.

Brenda, a Princess Diana lookalike, and Tina make a likeable couple and their relationship is put to the test in this book, as Brenda seemingly becomes obsessed with Malfour. The secondary characters are believable, especially Cubbie, a waitress at Brenda's favourite restaurant. The setting is well evoked and the story rattles along in an easy to read style. For me, I was more interested in the paranormal story line than in the current threat by persons unknown but I am a big fan of supernatural mysteries. I look forward with interest to the next in the series.
