20 something Claire Hansen is a Keeper, one of those who helps to "maintain the metaphysical balance of good on this world." She is summoned to places where anomalies in the fabric of the earth have caused rifts to open, and her brief is to seal these holes before the denizens of the underworld can exit into the world and cause even more chaos.

There are 3 kinds of people in Claire's world. Keepers, who must go where they are sent, Cousins, like her parents, who don't have full powers, and Bystanders, complete innocents, humans like Dean, who became part of Claire's life in the previous adventure Summon the Keeper. There is also Austin, Claire's sarcastic talking cat.

On Christmas Eve, Claire's younger sister, Diana, a powerful but immature Keeper, while simultaneously trying to look for Santa Claus and spy on Claire and Dean, accidentally opens a hole, while a lonely high school girl is trying to summon an angel. Chaos ensues. A beautiful fully formed teenaged boy appears in the girl's bedroom at the same moment as her father barges in. At almost the same moment, a demon in the form of a teen aged girl wriggles out of a hole from hell. , Claire, Dean, Austin, and even Diana, have to try and clear up the problems.

The Keeper's Chronicles are very different from the Vicki Nelson Blood.... series. Vicki and her vampire lover have to battle terrible monsters that are threatening various bits of Canada. Claire's world is made up of lots of tiny holes that must be mended so the giant hole she closed up in Summon the Keeper doesn't open up again. And if cats could really talk, they'd certainly sound just like Austin. A fantasy book for those who don't really like fantasy.
