In the early hours following her twenty-fifth birthday party social media star Desiree Pierce is found dead on a New York City playground, and the police put it down to a late night of partying and drugs, either an accidental overdose or suicide. Her half-sister, Lena Scott, is not so sure. She is convinced that Desiree would never have killed herself intentionally; nor would she have ventured into the Bronx neighbourhood where her body was found – unless, that is, it was to see Lena.

The family could own the franchise for affluent, spoiled, and dysfunctional clans. Their father Mel is a financially successful hi-hop music producer who alternatively ignores his daughters, showers them with lavish gifts, and generally enables their self-destructive impulses. Lena is estranged from her divorced father and hasn't spoken to her half-sister in two years, yet there remains a strong bond between the two siblings.

A graduate student at Columbia University, Lena is troubled by the ensuing investigation. The police detectives go through the motions, guided in part by Mel's desire to keep the family out of the narrative. The police seem bent on taking the path of least resistance. But there is CCTV footage showing Desiree wasn't driving her own car in the early hours of the morning, and one of her shoes was discovered several blocks from her body. Not least there is a two-hour gap between when she was last seen and the discovery of her body by the police. Lena resolves to look into Desiree's last hours for herself. The journey will take her into a dark world populated by music producers, social media influencers, con artists, media groupies and journalists who may be exploiting the tragedy of Desiree's final hours.

Author Kellye Garrett's style is fresh and in-your-face, with a strong narrative and pitch-perfect voice. Full of twists and turns, LIKE A SISTER totally immerses readers in a fast-paced tale of a sassy, streetwise, and independent woman trying to make sense of her sister's death and her own life. It will leave you wanting more from this very talented writer.
