Few thrillers capture the chaos and action of combat as vividly as does this debut military thriller from decorated combat veteran Joshua Hood. Himself the subject of an award-winning portrait (INTO THE HEART OF DARKNESS by James Dietz), Hood now presents his own take on life under fire in a novel based on the rogue actions of a highly placed official in the President's inner circle.

Once a highly regarded Special Ops warrior, Mason Kane is now on the run from his own government. Disgusted by the execution of an innocent Afghani family and abandoned by his unit, Kane has been labeled a terrorist, and there are forces currently seeking to execute him before he can tell his side of the story.

Meanwhile, a treacherous plot by someone in the administration is under way in the Middle East, which bypasses official policy and is leaving a bloodbath in its wake. The Afghan president is killed, whole villages are taken down, and the heads of soldiers are brandished on metal pikes. And that's just the beginning. When the rogue battle moves to Syria, Kane and others know that there is no other option but

to take to the streets of this war zone to stop the mad man at the helm of this rogue war.

Of course, by then, the CIA and military have gotten involved, and if it's possible, the bloody war escalates. This can be a dark, depressing story at times as it lies so close to the truth. However, for anyone who wants to understand what it is like to be in the heat of battle, with danger on all sides and a single mission in mind, can do no better than Hood's account.

Another very unusual thing that Hood has done is offer his readers a very real and compelling female character who is not a policymaker, but rather a hard-core soldier, on a par with the best, including Kane. There's a lot of promise in this new series for readers seeking some understanding of combat today. Hood has a very promising future as a military genre writer, as his first thriller proves.
