Dr Edward Jenner used to be a New York City medical examiner. He quit after 9/11. After almost a year, working under extreme conditions, trying to identify shards of flesh and bone for the survivors, he just burned out. The chief ME, Dr Steve Whittaker, was still in office and still too self-absorbed to comprehend what had happened. In addition, Whittaker's wife had left him for Jenner, so Whittaker was not pleased when Jenner was called in as a private ME after an especially horrific death was discovered.

A college student, Andrea Delore, was found dead in her apartment. She had been nailed upside down to the wall, with horrific wounds on her abdomen. Whittaker arrives on the scene, declares the girl dead, and leaves her screwed to the wall. Andie's father is the Massachusetts state attorney general, so even though Whittaker hates Jenner, he has to accept him. Jenner takes a look through the apartment and finds evidence of another victim in another room.

Andie's roommate, Ana de Jong, is waiting for Jenner when he returns to his loft. Ana's uncle owns a floor of the co-op where Jenner lives and although he is out of the country, Ana was able to reach him by phone and find out where Jenner's extra key was. Ana is afraid she will be the next victim. Jenner agrees to allow her to stay, but he has a couple of his friends from the police come and interview her first.

Although Jonathan Hayes is a famous forensic pathologist, the only thing this book has going for it is the descriptions of the crimes and the un-CSI-like forensics. He is apparently a food and wine critic as well. PRECIOUS BLOOD dwells lovingly on the crimes. However, if you want real people doing accurate forensic work, try Jeffery Deaver. Hayes is very predictable.
