Clive Cussler has recently announced that he plans to retire from writing by year's end. For over twenty years he has entertained readers with the exploits of the men and women of NUMA, the National Underwater Marine Association. He has had a good run. Dirk Pitt will be missed. For now, let's review the latest entry in the NUMA files series featuring Kurt Austin.

A sinister corporation is trying to divert attention from themselves by framing an environmental group in an act of defiance. Kurt Austin, head of NUMA's Special Assignments team manages to save in the nick of time several Danish sailors after being rammed by the protester's boat. Sentinels of the Sea group leader, Marcus Ryan claims that he had lost control of the ship that ignored his manual commands. The Danish government is not convinced and arrests him. SOS legal counsel Therri Weld asks Austin for his help in proving their innocence. Austin having the equipment readily available and nothing to lose decides to investigate. What he gets is the unwanted attention of Oceanus, an organization bent on ruling the seas. Don't they know that NUMA never quits?

WHITE DEATH is a purely escapist novel that takes a bit too long to get to get to the point. There are a lot of things happening, but nothing going on. The main villain is not revealed until late in the game and their plan is not exposed until much later. It is a plot taken from comic books, but readers do not really care. The action is over-the-top and that is the appeal of these books. Where else can you find Basque separatists, killer Eskimos and mutant fish? Only true fans might find enjoyment with this book. There are too many "give me a break"’ moments in the book that may annoy some people. Read it for what it is worth.
