Kathleen and Marcus are planning their wedding when, one morning, Kathleen discovers a dead body after she opens the library. The murdered man is Will Redfern, who just got out of jail for his assault on Kathleen.
The police are mystified since Kathleen had to turn off the alarm and use her keys to get in. How did Will get into the library? A pocketknife and pliers were found next to Will’s body, leading Kathleen to speculate he might have been trying to steal a painting hanging on the wall nearby. Marcus decides to explore the painting’s value and discovers it is valuable, much to the surprise of Kathleen and the library staff. The detective also finds out that the painting may have been part of an art theft years earlier from the collection of Robert Hamilton.
Now, the issue is how Will knew the painting’s value. Kathleen and Marcus are investigating — Marcus with his fellow police officers and Kathleen with Owen and Hercules, her magical cats. Both investigating teams eventually tie Will’s murder to the art theft years earlier.
In between seeking clues, Kathleen and Marcus indulge in traditional wedding activities, including a very elaborate shower for the bride-to-be. Family members from all over the country come in for the one-day event. In another subplot, Sofie Kelly introduces Riley and Duncan, a sister and brother duo that Kathleen and Marcus come to feel strongly about. The two siblings’ father is in rehab for alcoholism, and their grandfather is a mean tyrant, possibly a criminal.
Finally, there’s Owen and Hercules, who now have a new friend: Micah, Marcus’ Wisteria cat, who also has magical tendencies. Owen, the feline sleuth, manages to uncover revealing clues that lead to an unexpected and exciting conclusion to the mystery. Details of the wedding conclude this latest Magical Cats Mystery while the interaction between humans and felines provides a light but critical touch. Ms. Kelly weaves several story threads into an intriguing tapestry.
