Sixty seconds with Aden Polydoros...
Aden Polydoros grew up in Illinois and Arizona and has a bachelor's degree in English from Northern Arizona University. When he isn't writing, he enjoys going to antique fairs and flea markets. He can be found on Twitter at @AdenPolydoros. His forthcoming YA historical fantasy novel, THE CITY BEAUTIFUL (10/5/2021, Inkyard Press) received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal, and Bookpage.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Polydoros: Half author, half antiques collector, all Aden.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Polydoros: That’s a tough one, because I can hardly decide on a favorite book, much less a favorite album. Seeing as if I took a record, I’d have to listen to the same tracks over and over, I’d probably pick an album that I didn’t like—then get creative and use it for tool building.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Polydoros: I wanted to be an artist or writer. While my drawing skills are less than impressive, I’m happy that I was able to achieve half of my vision.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Polydoros: No comment.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Polydoros: I would probably fail at my job and inadvertently end up starting the apocalypse, haha. I’m not really a leadership type.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Polydoros: Twilight or The Hunger Games, because who doesn’t want to be a millionaire?
RTE: What makes you angry?
Polydoros: Many things, but most recently, the way in which the economy is often prioritized over human life.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Polydoros: Stephen King, Victoria Schwab, Neil Gaiman, Guillermo Del Toro, and R.L. Stein.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Polydoros: I can think of a few names. But in this case, I can’t imagine anything more terrifying than being stuck in a lift with enough screaming babies to fill a nursery. Nightmare fuel right there.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Polydoros: I’ve always been interested in reading and writing. I think what truly inspired me to begin writing was the realization that being an author was an actual career, and that with hard work and dedication, it was within my reach.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Polydoros: I’d love to live somewhere in Europe, either England or Germany probably. I had the privilege of studying abroad in Germany for three semesters during my undergraduate degree, and I’ve always wanted to go back there.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Polydoros: 1893, Chicago—one boy, one ghost, and the violence that connects them.
