Sixty seconds with Margaret Mizushima...
Margaret Mizushima is the author of the award-winning and internationally published Timber Creek K-9 Mysteries. Active within the writing community, Margaret serves on the board for the Rocky Mountain chapter of Mystery Writers of America and was elected the 2019-2020 Writer of the Year by Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. She lives in Colorado on a small ranch with her veterinarian husband where they raised two daughters and a host of animals. RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Mizushima: I'm a retired speech pathologist married to a veterinarian for almost thirty-eight years, mother of two daughters, and author of the award winning Timber Creek K-9 Mysteries.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Mizushima: I'd rather have a book, but the one record I'd take would be Ultimate Hits by Garth Brooks.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Mizushima: A veterinarian, a flight attendant, and a storyteller.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Mizushima: My oldest friend is a woman named Denise whom I met prior to entering our small rural elementary school. Our fathers worked on the same cattle ranch in the middle of nowhere in the Texas panhandle, and we're still friends today, decades later.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Mizushima: we'd all have time each day to sit with our dog or cat and read a book.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Mizushima: Gone With the Wind. I love the rich history, vivid description, and the complicated relationships and love story.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Mizushima: Abuse of any kind, whether it's animal, human, or environmental.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Mizushima: Five women who are my mystery writing idols: Anne Hillerman, Sue Grafton (yes, I know that's impossible), Tess Gerritsen, Margaret Coel, and J.A. Jance
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Mizushima: A serial killer
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Mizushima: Years of reading great books and the dream of being a storyteller. Years ago I stood in line at the grocery check out and wished I could write paperback novels like those I would find on the racks. When I retired from a busy career as a speech pathologist, I finally got the chance to follow my dream.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Mizushima: Definitely love living right here in Colorado.
