Sixty seconds with Sarah Hilary...
Sarah Hilary lives in Bath with her daughter, where she writes quirky copy for a well-loved travel publisher. She’s also worked as a bookseller, and with the Royal Navy. An award-winning short story writer, Sarah won the Cheshire Prize for Literature in 2012. She has written two crime thriller novels, both in the Marnie Rome series, and is currently writing the third.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Hilary: Bloody-minded crime writer fuelled by gin and caffeine.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Hilary: The soundtrack from Peaky Blinders, one of my favourite TV crime dramas.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Hilary: A journalist. My parents told me I was ‘too nice’ so I became a crime writer instead. That’s what happens when you tell me I can’t do stuff.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Hilary: MG Harris, who writes YA novels. We met when we were fifteen, fangirling over an actor from a TV sci-fi show who was appearing on stage at my local theatre. Then we lost touch for years, meeting up again when we were in our thirties. It was MG who persuaded me to turn to crime.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Hilary: HANNIBAL would never have got cancelled.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Hilary: The Collector by John Fowles.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Hilary: Intolerance.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Hilary: Benedict Cumberbatch, Ruby Rose, Albert Camus, Dorothy Parker. Oh and Patricia Highsmith, even though she hates dinner parties.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Hilary: Donald Trump.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Hilary: Books and comics and TV shows and the whispering in my head.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Hilary: Paris, or maybe somewhere snowy.
