When we first met private eye Aimée Leduc, fourteen books ago, she was unstoppable and always fashionable, even when chasing bad guys across the rooftops of Paris - in her high-heeled designer shoes, of course.

Now, Leduc is five months pregnant, wearing hand-me-down maternity clothes (though still designer brands) and ballet flats. And she's still chasing bad guys.

As the book opens, Leduc has the best of intentions: to stay off her swollen feet and concentrate on the bulk of her business, cybercrime. But she is caught up in a more dangerous investigation when thirteen-year-old Zazie goes missing. She's the daughter of the owners of Leduc's favorite café and a precocious teenager who looks up to - and emulates - Leduc. Zazie and a friend had been playing detective themselves after a fellow twelve-year-old student was sexually assaulted. Now Zazie is missing, and her parents are frantic. The flics, the Paris police, are treating it as just another runaway case.

But Leduc knows better. As she begins her investigation, another student is sexually assaulted in the Pigalle neighborhood of Paris, and the hunt for Zazie becomes more critical. Leduc is afraid the rapist may have kidnapped Zazie.

Amid this hunt for a child, Leduc is wrestling with her own fears of being a good mother. She's not even told the father, her on-again, off-again boyfriend Melac, about her pregnancy. Leduc's own mother disappeared when she was a child, and she has no sense of how to raise a child.

With each book, Leduc's life has become a bit more complicated, and the series a bit darker. But, with a child on the way, it looks like author Cara Black will have a whole new set of adventures to deliver.
