In what is one of the most engaging and creative debut novels in some time, British author Oliver Harris brings to life Detective Nick Belsey, one of the most unusual characters to ever solve a mystery. The mystery grabs readers' attention from the start, when we find the said detective passed out on Hampstead Heath in north London with a crashed squad car near by.

Needless to say, Belsey is on a bit of a bender. He's a world class drinker, he's about to be evicted from his lodgings, and hasn't a clue how he's going to just keep going. Enter a bit of luck (or so Belsey thinks) when he is sent to investigate a suicide. The Russian billionaire is dead, and his life is ripe for the taking, a perfect fit for Belsey.

Of course, all this dodgy behavior leads Belsey and Scotland Yard on a massive hunt for the mystery behind what becomes a "missing man." The twists and turns in this brilliantly crafted novel keep readers turning the pages for more. Each new development makes the landscape increasingly dangerous for both Belsey's new identity and for his real life work as a detective.

It soon becomes clear that the Russian was mixed up in something big that reaches into the halls of British government. How can the detective discover just what the scheme is without endangering himself and without revealing his new identity?

While the ending of the book is perhaps less powerful than its beginning, there are plenty of moments to enjoy along the way. Harris gives his readers strong characters, with not just Belsey but many pursuing double lives. The story also speaks to just what people will do when faced with desperate circumstances.

This thoroughly enjoyable tale is certain to leave readers longing for more about what has been dubbed "the coolest cop in London." Harris's dark humor and well-paced action suit the mystery genre well, and in detective Nick Belsey he has surely created the potential for an exciting new series.
