Jack and Krista are out in the desert with friends. They are there to see the wreck of an old airplane as it has a connection to Krista's mother. This site was used for bringing illegal aliens into the country from Mexico. After their friends leave, Jack and Krista stay on to enjoy a warm fire in the desert. Then to their surprise they see a truck appear in the near distance. When they attempt to get a better glimpse, someone fires a gun in their direction. Then the two of them disappear from view and from their friends and family.

Elvis Cole is hired by Nina Morales to locate her missing daughter, Krista. Nina believes that her daughter has gotten into some kind of trouble due to her less than desirable boyfriend, Jack. Cole is a little reluctant to take the case as Krista is of legal age. However, after hearing all of the circumstances, he changes his mind and agrees to investigate. In fact, he turns to Joe Pike for help as the situation is even more serious than he originally imaged. While human smuggling is common and is in the news, the politics behind it and the gangs involved are even more dangerous than the news reports would indicate. It seems that Jack and Krista have gotten themselves caught up in a human smuggling ring and need all of the help they can get. Cole does his best to rescue them but needs the help of Joe Cole and Jon Stone to get everyone out alive.

As always Robert Crais tells a fantastic tale. His characters are well drawn and seem almost to exist outside the book itself. In fact, if possible I would love to meet Joe Pike and Elvis Cole. Even though they are both completely different characters, they are both well-drawn and seem as though they would be interesting friends to make.

The details of human smuggling and the gang warfare involved are well-developed and very informative. I felt as though I learned more about these crimes from this book than I have from the news.

I adore this series and cannot wait for the next book in the series to be published!
